Thomas Heise: Heimat is a Space in Time

Film and Talk

Thomas Heise’s film Material opens: “You may think that history is elliptical, but it’s a heap.” It combines fragments of the radical changes in 1988-89, when another Germany still seemed possible: observations in a prison, at the theatre, at assemblies and during building evictions. Ten years later, Heise said: “It’s meant to bear witness. I know that sounds pathetic.” Alongside chronicles of his family that reflect the social dislocations of an entire century, Heise’s Heimat is a Space in Time again focuses on the relationships people have to history.

Heise's documentary Material (2009) is shown on 5 Oct at 2 pm.
