Mein Land will nicht verschwinden

Film and Talk

“The capitulation of German socialism on 9 November 1989 happened casually ‒ in the form of a travel law.

In light of the continued upheavals and fault lines drawn around the “acceding territory” that was the former GDR, the question is repeatedly asked: How did that come about in the East? One talks about the East as if it were a difficult child: ididactically, compassionately or therapeutically, depending on one’s perspective. Did the end of the GDR truly exhaust the expectations that had been invested in the country? Or did they remain placeless?

Every present becomes history, and every history a contested space. In every struggle for history lies a struggle for the present.” (Andreas Goldstein)

Andreas Goldstein, documentary and feature film director, uses his films (Der Funktionär, Adam und Evelyn) to address social dislocation before and after “Die Wende” (German reunification), by describing atmospheres, raising doubts and questioning his own perspective.

In his current essay film, Goldstein confronts his story with the media’s presentation of political events on East and West television in the 1990s, which still provide insights into the contrasting points of view today.
