Magic Media – Media Magic Wulf Herzogenrath and Guests I

Talk about the exhibition

Since the 1960s, visual artists have been aware of the immediacy that video imagery offers their works and made use of this technology originally developed for television. Video art increasingly established itself in the 1970s (e.g. Projekt ’74, Cologne) and a “video” section curated by Wulf Herzogenrath became part of documenta 6 (1977) for the first time. Since the 1980s, artists have been developing new ways to technically manipulate electronic images and sound structures to alter the aesthetics of visual imagery and perception. Access to digital image production opened new dimensions once again. Wulf Herzogenrath’s archive reflects the wide field of video art between performance and sculpture.

The exhibition shows art and documentary film material, written documents, sketches, photography and artist’s guest books, including works by Vito Acconci, Klaus vom Bruch, John Cage, peter campus, Lutz Dammbeck, Joan Jonas, Rebecca Horn, Nam June Paik, Bjørn Melhus, Marcel Odenbach, Sigmar Polke, Ulrike Rosenbach, Bill Viola, and artists featured in the edition Videoart at Midnight.
