The members are at the heart of the Academy and are actively involved in shaping the institution. They not only determine (by election) the President and Section Directors to manage affairs, but also play a significant part in developing the content programme as well as in its realisation. Those artists who have made a particular contribution to contemporary art can be appointed members of the Akademie der Künste, as can those persons who have performed a great service in a neighbouring field of any of the arts represented in the Academy. New members are proposed by the Sections or the Senate; they are elected by the General Assembly and appointed by the President.

The Academy members usually convene twice a year at the General Assembly in the Akademie der Künste.

The members’ biographies, catalogue of works as well as other details, as appropriate, are kept in the members database. Former members can be found via the advanced search function.
The explanations will provide information on the various names of the institutions and functions since 1696.
