“The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within”
Scholarship holders of the JUNGE AKADEMIE present new works

Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg
Exhibition March 1 – April 4 2024, opening 29/02/2024, 6 pm
Events 16 + 17 March 2024

In an exhibition and as part of various events, 35 international scholarship holders of the JUNGE AKADEMIE will show new works they have created at the Akademie in the Hansaviertel and at Villa Serpentara in Olevano Romano. JUNGE AKADEMIE is the international residency programme of the Akademie der Künste.

The title “The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within”, a quote by American architect and artist John Hejduk (1929 - 2000), stands for the transdisciplinary and border-crossing artistic practice of the scholarship holders, who come together in one place with different aesthetic designs of worlds and political and social realities. The biographical roots of the artists are in Germany, Europe, Iran, Ukraine, Belarus, Lebanon, Japan, Canada, Afghanistan, Palestine, Brazil, Korea, the USA and China. Their works are permeated by the search for methods of caring and remembering, for images of the self and the world, and for a voice as an expression of resilience and resistance in the face of current crises and wars.

Photographs, video works, spatial and sound installations, textile works, sculptures, drawings and paintings in the exhibition question aesthetic, social and territorial boundaries and communicate alternative viewing and listening habits. The work on a new phonetic alphabet, the joining of thousands of drawings in a stop-motion film or the collective stitching of symbols and images create poetic snapshots of social backgrounds and portray communities with their feelings and voices.

In the two-day event programme, the body, its language and movement in relation to architecture form an immediate force field, in which the artists share their critical view of the present. Concerts, readings, workshops, film screenings and performances combine at various locations within the Akademie der Künste. Here, traditional aesthetic rituals and art forms meet contemporary theatrical productions and queer subculture.
