Reparations and Repair. A Symposium on Climate Justice, Colonialism and the Capitalocene

Saturday, 20 January 2024, 2–8 pm
Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz 4, 10117 Berlin

What could strategies for repairing the damaged world look like? What do "reparations" mean in the context of climate justice, and how can the claim to them be supported?

Marginalised people around the world are suffering considerably from the environmental destruction already caused and the consequences of climate change, for which Western industrialised countries and companies bear responsibility. However, the West, especially the business community, has so far refused to make a significant contribution to a compensation fund.

On Saturday, 20 January 2024, those affected from individual regions, experts and artists will discuss the historical, economic and ecological contexts of climate change as well as legal and political claims for reparations to the former colonial powers at the Akademie der Künste.

The symposium was curated by Wolfgang Kaleck (European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights, ECCHR).

With: Verene A. Shepherd (The University of the West Indies), Luisa Neubauer

(Fridays for Future), Nathalia Favaro, Tomás Saraceno, Miki Yui (artists), Joshua Castellino (Minority Rights Group International), Nasir Mansoor (National Trade Union Federation Pakistan), Priya Morley (University of California), Anh-Linh Ngo and Alexandra Nehmer (ARCH+), Miriam Saage-Maaß (ECCHR), Andres Veiel (filmmaker)

Moderation: Johanna M. Keller (Akademie der Künste), Andrea Böhm (Die Zeit), Laura Duarte (ECCHR)
