Last days: Exhibition “The Great Repair” ends on Sunday, 14 January 2024 with a lecture by Mierle Laderman Ukeles

Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg

Against the background of the current environmental and social crises, the exhibition “The Great Repair” presents more than 40 positions from art and architecture, as well as spatial practices, which envision repair as a new design paradigm. Starting with the building of the Akademie itself, the exhibition renders the processes and spaces of maintenance and care visible. The scope ranges from everyday practices of care to examples of how to build with existing substance rather than erecting new buildings.

At the finissage on Sunday, 14 January 2024, the feminist and multidisciplinary American artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles will give her first-ever lecture in Berlin. In the matinée event taking place at 11:30 am, curated by Bettina Knaup, she will talk about her work and its focus on the existential necessity and endless nature of the everyday work or care and maintenance. In her ground-breaking “Manifesto for Maintenance Art!” from 1969, she radically declared maintenance work to be art. Since 1977 she has been an artist in residence at New York City’s Department of Sanitation, where she has focused intensively on the city’s urban waste cycle, in particular relating to landfills. Following her lecture, Lisa Baraitser, Professor of Psychosocial Theory at the Birkbeck University of London and author of Enduring Time, will speak about temporal dimensions of (artistic) care work before joining in a group talk moderated by Bettina Knaup.

Also on the last day of the exhibition, a preview will be shown of the first episode of a TV documentary about the exhibition, produced by Kloos & Co. Medien. Participants will talk about approaches to repair architecture (3 pm). The subsequent roundtable discussion “Umdenken statt Abreißen” (Rethink, don’t demolish) by the an.ders Urania initiative (4 pm) will focus on the future of the building An der Urania 4-10, which is currently threatened with demolition.
