On 26 May 1945, Leo Borchard, the newly appointed head of the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted the first concert after the war. The conductor, who had steadfastly refused to align himself with the Third Reich, was shot and killed three months later. After nearly 20 years Matthias Sträßner has dedicated himself to Borchard’s biography a second time. Through the unexpected resurfacing of the archive of the conductor’s sister, which is now a part of the music archives at the Akademie der Künste, the “Borchard Case” has been reopened.
